Six Hearing Loss Facts
- 1. Hearing loss is a gradual process, and in most cases, takes place over many years. As there is no sudden change, people may not be aware of the problem until it is severe enough to cause many communication difficulties.
- 2. Family and friends are likely to identify that their loved ones are hard of hearing before they realise it themselves. As a result, many hearing impaired people suffer needlessly for years before seeking a hearing loss test.
- 3. On average, seven quality years of life are wasted in delays in seeking assistance. This is an unfortunate statistic, as we now know that early intervention in hearing impairment is very important.
- 4. The longer a person ignores the problem, the more difficult the adjustment will be when hearing aids are eventually fitted. Early intervention allows for easier rehabilitation.
- 5. Hearing disorders do not protect your ears from excessive noise. Intense sounds will do damage, and cause noise induced hearing loss, even if you have a pre-existing loss. It is important to protect your hearing as much as a person with normal hearing.
- 6. Effective communication is also an essential ingredient in the quality of our lives. Acting early to address hearing difficulties, and seek hearing loss treatment, is paramount to success.
The Three Main Causes of Hearing Loss Explained
Sensorineural hearing loss is the most common type and is the result of
damage to the inner ear and its connecting nerves. It is generally untreatable, and for most, the only effective solution is a hearing aid. The most common cause is due to advancing age, which is called presbyacusis. Typically presbyacusis affects the high pitch sounds first and advances with age.
Conductive hearing loss occurs when there is something blocking the sound from being effectively conducted to the inner ear, where the sound is processed. This may be caused by wax build-up, an infection in the outer or middle ear, a ruptured or scarred eardrum, and other middle and outer ear disorders.
In adults, a disease known as otosclerosis causes the middle ear bones to move less effectively. In children, glue ear, where the middle ear fills with fluid, is very common.
In some cases a hearing impairment can be caused by both a conductive and a sensorineural component. In these cases the loss is known as a mixed hearing loss.
